Figuring out how to start using cloth nappies for the first time can feel a little daunting. How many nappies do I need? What do I do with dirty nappies? We break the process down into the three simple things you’ll want to think about before you hit ‘go’ on your cloth nappy journey.
1. Decide how many nappies you need
Before you begin, you’re going to need to choose how many cloth nappies you’ll need in your stash.
If you want to take baby steps and only use cloth nappies part-time, 8-10 cloth nappies is a good start and will get you through 2-3 changes a day. However, if you’re ready to go all-in and use cloth nappies day and night, 24-28 nappies will set you up for success.

Setting up your nursery is one of the most Pinterest-able things around—and we totally get it. You want a blend of beauty and function when it comes to making your littles one’s nursery and change station work.
Here are the essentials you’ll need to have ready at your change table to make using cloth nappies a breeze…
- Spare nappies within arms reach
- Reusable bamboo wipes for little bums
- A water or spray bottle to moisten wipes
- A dry pail or wet bag to transport soiled nappies and wipes to the laundry
3. Develop your daily washing routine
This is one part of the cloth nappy process that feels overwhelming until you begin. In reality, it’s very easy!
You’ll need a dry pail to store soiled nappies in until you’re ready for your daily pre-wash cycle. Then every second day, run a main-wash cycle to clean all the nappies together. You’ll very quickly develop a washing routine that works for you.
